Conflict Textiles

Conflict Textiles is a large collection of local and international pieces including textiles, arpilleras, quilts, wall hangings, paintings, and sculptures which focus on elements of conflict and human rights abuses.

Conflict Textiles has its origins in an exhibition The Art of Survival: International and Irish Quilts which was held at nine venues across Derry in early 2008.

Since 2008, over 130 exhibitions, featuring arpilleras, quilts and wall hangings, and related events have been hosted in museums, universities, art galleries, embassies and community spaces worldwide.

The curator Roberta Bacic has been custodian of the growing collection over the past three decades.

Conflict Textiles is an ‘Associated Site’ of CAIN (Conflict Archive on the Internet) at Ulster University, Northern Ireland.

Following the footsteps of the disappeared,  an exhibition  at Casa Seminario in Mexico City on the theme of the search for the disappeared, and dedicated to the relatives of the disappeared. Through the stitched scraps of fabric – some of it remnants of clothing belonging to a disappeared person - we are confronted with the agony of the families as they search for their relatives’ remains and pursue their relentless quest for justice.
